Sports betting has a vocabulary all its own โ€” half football jargon, half maths jargon, half slang from London bookmakers in the 1970s. This page is the quick reference. Two sections: Football Betting Markets (the categories you see when you open a fixture on any bookmaker) explained with concrete examples, then the full A-Z Glossary of betting terminology.

Use โŒ˜+F / Ctrl+F to find a specific term. Many entries link to relevant Betloy tools (Odds Scanner, Risk Trimmer, etc.) where the concept is most useful in practice.

Football betting markets โ€” by category

Open any fixture on Bet9ja, Sportybet, 1xBet, or any major bookmaker and you'll see dozens of category tabs. Here's what each one actually means, with real-odds examples. We define the category โ€” not every individual line within it.

Match Result ยท 6 markets

1X2 (Match Result / Three-Way)

Pick the winner โ€” Home, Draw, or Away.

The default football market. Three possible outcomes: Home (1), Draw (X), or Away (2).

Example

Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” Hibernian 4.70 ยท Draw 4.15 ยท Celtic 1.65. Pick Celtic at 1.65, stake โ‚ฆ1,000, returns โ‚ฆ1,650 if Celtic win 90 minutes.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Settled at full-time only. Extra-time goals don't count.

1X2 1UP / 2UP

Insurance variants โ€” your team starts with a 1- or 2-goal head start.

1X2 1UP starts your selection 1-0 up before kick-off; 2UP starts 2-0 up. Lower odds than straight 1X2 because you're effectively buying a head-start.

Example

Hibernian/Celtic โ€” Celtic 1X2 1UP at 1.29 (vs 1.65 standard) means Celtic start virtually 1-0 up; if real score finishes 0-0, your bet still wins because virtual = 1-0 to Celtic.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Useful when you're confident but worried about a 0-0 or narrow loss.

Double Chance

Cover two of the three outcomes on one slip.

Combines two outcomes into one bet โ€” Home or Draw / Home or Away / Draw or Away. Lower odds than 1X2 but ~67% probability instead of ~33%.

Example

Hibernian/Celtic โ€” Hibernian or Draw at 2.09. You win if Hibernian wins OR if it's a draw. Only loses if Celtic win.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Good for low-confidence picks where you want to remove one losing outcome.

Draw No Bet (DNB)

Stake refunded if it's a draw.

A two-way bet โ€” pick Home or Away. If the match ends in a draw, you get your stake back (no profit, no loss). Lower odds than 1X2 because the draw risk is removed.

Example

Hibernian DNB at 3.55, Celtic DNB at 1.27. Stake โ‚ฆ1,000 on Celtic; if Celtic win you get โ‚ฆ1,270; if Celtic lose you get nothing; if it's a draw you get โ‚ฆ1,000 back.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Cheaper than buying Asian Handicap +0 โ€” same effective bet.

Half-Time / Full-Time (HT/FT)

Predict who leads at half-time AND who wins at full-time.

A grid of 9 outcomes โ€” three half-time results crossed with three full-time results. Long odds because both halves need to match.

Example

Hibernian/Celtic โ€” Celtic/Celtic (lead at HT, win at FT) at 2.43. Draw/Celtic (level at HT, Celtic wins) at 4.70. Hibernian/Celtic (Hibs lead at HT, Celtic come back to win) at 20.00.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Comeback HT/FT bets (e.g. Draw/Away or Home/Away) pay big โ€” but rare in elite football.

Rest of the Match

In-play only. Bet on the result from the current minute onwards.

Live-only market. The current score becomes 0-0 for betting purposes โ€” you're betting on what happens from now until full-time. Useful when the early game flow contradicts the pre-match price.

Example

Match is 2-1 to Home with 30 mins left. Rest of the Match โ€” Home 21.00 ยท Draw ยท Away 7.75. Backing Away here means betting Away outscores Home in the remaining 30 minutes.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Available almost only in-play; closes near the final whistle.

Goals ยท 10 markets

Over/Under (Goals)

Bet on whether total goals will be over or under a line.

Pick a goal line (0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, etc.) and bet whether the match total goes Over or Under it. The most-traded football market after 1X2.

Example

Over/Under 2.5 in Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” Over 2.5 at 1.60 ยท Under 2.5 at 2.26. A 3-1 result settles Over 2.5 winners; 1-1 settles Under 2.5 winners; 2-0 settles Under (since 2 is not over 2.5).

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Lines ending in .5 mean no push โ€” there's always a winner.

Over/Under Asian (Goals)

Quarter-line goal totals โ€” half-stake refunds possible.

Asian-style goal lines: 0.75, 1.25, 1.75, 2.25, 2.75 etc. A quarter-line is treated as a split bet โ€” half on the lower line, half on the higher.

Example

Over 2.75 at 1.73 โ€” half your stake is on Over 2.5, half on Over 3.0. If match has 3 goals: Over 2.5 wins (half), Over 3.0 pushes (half-stake refunded). If 2 goals: both halves lose. If 4+ goals: both halves win.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Use when you think the match is right at the line and you want partial-loss protection.

Exact Goals

Bet on the exact total number of goals scored.

Pick a specific total โ€” 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6+. Higher odds than Over/Under because there's only one winning total.

Example

Hibernian/Celtic โ€” Exact 2 goals at 4.10. Wins if final score is any 2-goal total: 2-0, 1-1, 0-2. Loses on 0-0, 1-0, 0-1, or anything 3+.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Pairs well with Correct Score for stake-stacking around your predicted scoreline.

Both Teams to Score (BTTS / GG/NG)

Will both teams score at least one goal? Yes (GG) or No (NG).

GG = "Goal/Goal" = Yes, both teams score. NG = "No Goal" = No, at least one team is shut out. The most popular goals-related market in African football.

Example

Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” GG at 1.60 ยท NG at 2.27. A 2-1 result settles GG winners. 0-0, 2-0, 0-3 all settle NG winners.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: BTTS Yes hits ~55-60% of Premier League fixtures โ€” always check vs the price.

BTTS 2+ (GG/NG 2+)

Both teams must score TWO or more goals each โ€” not just one.

Same logic as BTTS but the bar is higher. Both teams need at least 2 goals each. Hits roughly 8-12% of football matches.

Example

Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” Yes (GG 2+) at 7.69 ยท No at 1.05. A 3-2 result wins GG 2+. A 2-1 result loses (Hibs only scored 1 if they're Away).

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: High odds market โ€” usually a long-shot leg in accumulators rather than a singleton.

First Team to Score

Which team scores the opening goal โ€” or nobody?

Three-way market: Home / No Goal / Away. "No Goal" wins on 0-0 final scores.

Example

Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” Hibernian 2.70 ยท No Goal 13.25 ยท Celtic 1.50. If Celtic score the opener and the match finishes 0-2, Celtic wins this market.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Higher correlation with the favourite than people think โ€” but pricing usually reflects it.

Score in First X Minutes

Will any goal be scored within the first 5, 20, or 30 minutes?

Yes/No bet on whether at least one goal happens before a specific minute mark. The shorter the window, the higher the No price.

Example

Score in 5 Minutes โ€” Yes 6.90 ยท No 1.00. Score in 20 Minutes โ€” Yes 2.12 ยท No 1.50. Score in 30 Minutes โ€” Yes 1.55 ยท No 2.03.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Score-in-5 Yes is a popular high-risk leg in trick accumulators because the No is so heavily favoured.

Team to Lead by X Goals at Any Time

Will any team (or a specific team) hold a 2- or 3-goal lead at some point in the match?

Yes/No on whether the goal difference reaches 2 or 3 at any moment during the 90 minutes โ€” even if it's pegged back later.

Example

Any Team to lead by 2 Goals at any time โ€” Yes 11.15 ยท No 1.01. A match that goes 2-0, then 2-2 still settles Yes (because the 2-goal lead existed).

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Often available as Home-only / Away-only too. Useful for backing big favourites you expect to dominate early.

Team to Score X Goals in a Row

Will a team score 2 or 3 unanswered goals in a row?

Yes/No on whether one team strings together consecutive goals without the opposition replying in between. Different from "score X goals total" โ€” order matters.

Example

Any Team to Score 3 or More Goals in a Row โ€” Yes 15.64 ยท No 1.01. A match that goes 0-1, 0-2, 0-3 settles Yes. A match that goes 0-1, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 also settles Yes (because Away's 2nd-3rd-4th goals were unanswered).

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: High-odds long-shot โ€” typically only relevant in matches with a heavy expected goal differential.

Odd / Even (Total Goals)

Will the total goals be an odd or even number?

Two-way bet on the parity of the goal total. 0 counts as Even.

Example

Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” Odd 1.86 ยท Even 1.88. A 2-1 (=3 goals) settles Odd; a 1-1 or 0-0 (=2 or 0) settles Even.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Almost always priced near 50/50 because total parity is a coin-flip in practice.

Specific Score ยท 2 markets

Correct Score

Predict the EXACT final score.

A grid of every realistic scoreline (typically 0-0 through 4-4 plus "Any Other Score"). Highest-variance football market โ€” long odds, low probability.

Example

Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” 0-2 at 9.30 ยท 1-1 at 8.40 ยท 2-1 at 15.00 ยท 0-0 at 13.25. Stake โ‚ฆ500 on 0-2; if Celtic win 2-0 you get โ‚ฆ4,650.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Per-scoreline hit rate is ~6-12% even on the favourite โ€” don't over-stake.

Multi Correct Score

Bundle of correct scores grouped together โ€” wins on any of them.

Pre-bundled groups of correct scores combined into one bet. Wins if the actual final score matches ANY score in your selected group. Lower odds than single Correct Score, much higher hit rate.

Example

Multi C.Score (1) โ€” group "0-0 / 1-1" at 5.60. Wins on either 0-0 or 1-1 final score. Group "2-2 / 3-3 / 4-4" at 10.00 wins on any high-scoring draw.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Better expected value than single Correct Score for most punters.

Handicap ยท 2 markets

Handicap (European / 3-Way)

Add or subtract whole goals before settling โ€” three outcomes (Home/Draw/Away).

Whole-goal handicaps: -1, +1, +2, +3 etc. The handicap is added to one team's actual score before deciding the result. Draw is still possible (when handicap-adjusted score equals).

Example

Hibernian (Home -1) โ€” Hibernian 11.75 ยท Draw 5.40 ยท Celtic 1.15. If Hibs lose -1 handicap they need to win by 2+ goals. A 2-1 Hibs win = adjusted 1-1 = Draw wins this market.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Cheaper than betting on the favourite outright; harder than betting on the underdog outright.

Asian Handicap

Half- and quarter-goal handicaps โ€” eliminates the draw, allows partial wins.

Two-way handicap with no draw possible. Lines come in halves (-0.5, +1.5) and quarters (-0.25, +0.75). Quarter-lines split your stake across two adjacent half-lines for partial-win/partial-push outcomes.

Example

Hibernian (Home -0.5) at 4.70 โ€” Hibs must win for this to settle. Hibernian (Home +1.5) at 1.38 โ€” Hibs only need to lose by less than 2 (or win/draw). Hibernian (Home +0.25) at 2.70 โ€” half stake on +0 (DNB), half on +0.5.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: The +0 line (sometimes shown as "level") is identical to Draw No Bet.

Other Categories ยท 6 markets

Bookings (Cards)

Markets on yellow and red cards.

Includes total bookings points (yellow = 10pts, red = 25pts on most books), team with most cards, first card, total cards over/under, and player to be booked.

Example

"Total Bookings Points Over 35.5" at 1.85 โ€” needs roughly 4+ yellows worth of cards across both teams. Hot derbies push this regularly; tame friendlies don't.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Referee identity matters a lot โ€” strict refs can swing this market 30-40%.

Corners

Markets on corner kicks.

Total corners over/under (8.5, 9.5, 10.5 most common), team with most corners, first corner, race-to-X-corners. Very popular in-play because corner counts spike in the final 10 minutes.

Example

"Total Corners Over 9.5" at 1.92 โ€” needs 10+ corners across the match. EPL average is ~10.3 corners/match.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Style-of-play matters more than team strength โ€” wing-heavy attacks push corners up.

Combo (Combined Markets)

Two or more conditions stacked into one bet for higher odds.

Pre-built market combinations like "Result + BTTS", "Result + Over/Under", "BTTS + Over/Under". Equivalent to a 2-leg same-game accumulator but priced as one market.

Example

"Celtic Win + Over 2.5 + BTTS Yes" at 4.20 โ€” needs Celtic to win, total goals 3+, AND both teams to score. A 3-1 Celtic win covers all three.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Often better-priced than building the same combo as a manual SGA on the same book.

Players (Player Props)

Markets on individual player performance.

Anytime goalscorer, first goalscorer, last goalscorer, player to be booked, shots on target, assists, total touches, etc. Heavy variance โ€” depends on minutes played and tactical role.

Example

"Erling Haaland Anytime Goalscorer" at 1.55 โ€” wins if Haaland scores any goal in regulation. "Haaland 2+ Goals" at 3.40 โ€” wins only if he scores 2+.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Always check team news โ€” a benched/injured key player tanks the value of related player props.

Teams (Team Specials)

Markets focused on a single team's performance.

Includes individual team Over/Under (e.g., "Las Vegas Lights Over 2.5" โ€” bet on a specific team's goal total only), team to score in both halves, team to win both halves, team clean sheet.

Example

Lexington SC Over/Under 1.5 โ€” Over 1.5 at 7.00 means Lexington alone need to score 2+. Match could finish 0-2 to opposition and Lexington Over 1.5 still loses.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Useful when you have a strong view on attack/defence asymmetry between the two teams.

Minutes (Time-Specific Markets)

Markets resolved by what happens in a specific time window.

4th Goal market (Home/None/Away โ€” who scores the next/4th goal), score-in-X-minutes, goal-in-each-half, latest goal-time, and "next goal" markets. All settled within a defined minute range.

Example

"4th Goal" โ€” Home 12.50 ยท None 5.20 ยท Away 7.75. Wins on whoever scores the 4th goal of the match (or "None" if there's no 4th goal). Match finishes 2-1 = "None" wins.

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: Heavy in-play traffic on these โ€” odds shift fast as match minutes tick.

# ยท 1 term

1X2 Market
The standard football match-result market โ€” 1 = home win, X = draw, 2 = away win. Example: Real Madrid (1) vs Getafe (2) โ€” 1 = Real Madrid wins (1.40), X = draw (4.50), 2 = Getafe wins (8.00). Stake โ‚ฆ1,000 on Real Madrid; returns โ‚ฆ1,400 if Real Madrid wins, โ‚ฆ0 otherwise.

A ยท 5 terms

Accumulator Bet Type
A bet combining multiple selections into one slip โ€” every leg must win for the bet to pay. Also called "acca" or "parlay". The more legs, the higher the potential payout but the lower the win probability. Example: You combine 5 selections (Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, Bayern, PSG) at average 1.80 odds each โ€” total acca odds โ‰ˆ 18.90. Stake โ‚ฆ500, returns โ‚ฆ9,450 if all 5 win. Miss any single one and the whole slip loses.
Action General
A bet that's been accepted and is now live. "I've got action on Arsenal" means there's a placed bet on Arsenal. Example: "Got action on Real Madrid at 2.10" โ€” there's a confirmed bet sitting on Real Madrid waiting to settle.
Ante-post Bet Type
A bet placed days, weeks or months before an event โ€” most common in horse racing and tournament-winner futures. Higher potential odds, higher risk (no payout if your selection withdraws). Example: In June, betting on Manchester City to win the Premier League at 2.50 (with the season starting in August) is an ante-post bet. If City wins, you collect; if they get relegated mid-season or pull out, you lose your stake.
Arbitrage (Arb) Strategy
Placing offsetting bets on the same event across multiple bookmakers when their odds combine to guarantee a profit regardless of outcome. Most operators ban suspected arbitrage bettors. Example: Bet9ja prices Arsenal at 2.10 to win, MSport prices Chelsea at 2.10 to win the same match. Backing both for โ‚ฆ1,000 each guarantees a return of โ‚ฆ2,100 against โ‚ฆ2,000 staked โ€” guaranteed โ‚ฆ100 profit, regardless of outcome.
Asian Handicap Market
A handicap bet that eliminates the draw possibility by adding fractional or quarter-goal handicaps to one team. Common formats: -0.5, -1, -1.5, -2 etc. Half-stake refunds on quarter-line splits. Example: Celtic -0.5 means Celtic must win outright. Celtic +0.5 means Celtic wins or draw both pay. See full breakdown in Markets โ†’ Handicap.

B ยท 7 terms

Banker Strategy
A selection considered very likely to win, used as the foundation of an accumulator. "Bayern at home is my banker today.". Example: "Real Madrid at home to a relegation team is my banker today" โ€” the leg you're most confident in, often used as the foundation of a multi-leg accumulator.
Beard General
A person who places bets on behalf of someone the bookmaker has banned or wouldn't accept stakes from. Generally illegal in regulated markets. Example: A pro punter who's been limited at Bet9ja gives โ‚ฆ50,000 to a friend (the "beard") to place the bet under their name. Banned in regulated markets; bookmakers void detected beard bets.
Bet Code (Booking Code) Conversion
A short alphanumeric reference (typically 5-8 characters) bookmakers generate when you save a bet slip. Sharing the code lets others load your selections onto their own slip on the same bookmaker. Betloy converts these between bookmakers โ€” see the converter. Example: You build a 5-leg slip on Bet9ja, hit "Save" and get the code B3US96U. Share that on WhatsApp and anyone with a Bet9ja account can paste it into "Load Coupon" to load the same selections.
Bookie / Bookmaker General
The operator that takes your bet, sets the odds, and pays out winnings. Example: Bet9ja, Sportybet, 1xBet, Paripesa and Hollywoodbet are all bookmakers. They set the odds, take the bet, and pay you out if you win.
Both Teams To Score (BTTS) Market
Yes/No bet on whether both teams in a match score at least one goal. Often called "GG / NG" in African and European betting. Example: Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” BTTS Yes 1.60, BTTS No 2.27. A 2-1 result settles Yes. A 0-2 settles No (Hibernian was shut out).
Bonus / Welcome Bonus Promotion
A free bet, deposit match, or other promotional credit a bookmaker offers โ€” usually to new accounts. Almost always carries wagering / rollover requirements before withdrawal. Example: Bet9ja's "100% match up to โ‚ฆ100,000" โ€” deposit โ‚ฆ50,000, get an extra โ‚ฆ50,000 in bonus credit. You typically need to wager the bonus 5-10ร— at minimum 1.80 odds before withdrawal.
Boosted Odds (Price Boost) Promotion
A bookmaker temporarily increases the odds on a specific selection, usually for marketing reasons. Often capped at low stakes. Example: Sportybet boosts Liverpool to win from 1.65 to 1.85 for one Saturday only โ€” same selection, better price, usually capped at โ‚ฆ2,000-5,000 max stake.

C ยท 6 terms

Cash Out Feature
Settling a live bet for an offered amount before the event ends. The cash-out price reflects current likelihood of winning. Useful for locking in profit or limiting losses; the operator usually takes a margin so it's rarely positive EV. Example: You backed a 4-leg acca at โ‚ฆ1,000 โ†’ โ‚ฆ8,500 potential return. After 3 legs win and the 4th is at 0-0 with 10 mins left, the bookmaker offers โ‚ฆ5,200 cash-out. Take it = lock in โ‚ฆ4,200 profit; let it ride = either win โ‚ฆ7,500 more or lose everything.
Chalk General
The favourite โ€” the selection with the lowest odds. Example: In Real Madrid vs a relegation team at 1.20 odds, Real Madrid is the chalk. "Backing the chalk" = backing the heavy favourite.
Combo Bet Bet Type
See Accumulator. Example: See Accumulator. e.g., 4 picks combined into one slip at 12.50 total odds.
Correct Score Market
A bet on the exact final score of a match. High odds, low win probability โ€” typical favourite-scoreline hits 6-12% of the time. Example: Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” 0-2 at 9.30, 1-1 at 8.40, 2-1 at 15.00. A โ‚ฆ500 stake on 0-2 returns โ‚ฆ4,650 if Celtic wins 2-0. See also Multi Correct Score in the markets section above.
Coupon General
Another word for bet slip. Common in African and European betting vocabulary. Example: "Pass me your coupon" = "share your bet slip code with me." Equivalent to "betslip" in UK English.
Cover Strategy
A team "covers" the spread when they win by more than the handicap. "Manchester City covered the -1.5.". Example: On a Manchester City -1.5 handicap, City need to win by 2+ goals. A 2-0 City win = covered. A 2-1 City win = didn't cover (only 1-goal margin).

D ยท 5 terms

Dead Heat Outcome
A tie for first place (in horse racing or non-binary outcomes). Stakes are typically split proportionally. Example: Two horses cross the finish line simultaneously. Your win bet on one of them pays half โ€” if you backed at 4.00 with โ‚ฆ1,000 stake, you get โ‚ฆ2,000 back instead of the full โ‚ฆ4,000.
Decimal Odds Format
The most common format in Africa and Europe. The number includes your stake โ€” so 2.50 means a โ‚ฆ100 stake returns โ‚ฆ250 (โ‚ฆ150 profit + โ‚ฆ100 stake back). Compare to fractional (3/2) or American (+150). Example: 2.50 means a โ‚ฆ100 stake returns โ‚ฆ250 total (โ‚ฆ150 profit + โ‚ฆ100 stake back). 1.50 means โ‚ฆ100 returns โ‚ฆ150 (โ‚ฆ50 profit). 4.00 means โ‚ฆ100 returns โ‚ฆ400 (โ‚ฆ300 profit).
Deposit Limit Responsible
A self-imposed cap on how much you can deposit to a sportsbook in a given period. Required by every regulated African operator. Use it. Example: Set "max โ‚ฆ20,000 deposit per week" in your Bet9ja account. After โ‚ฆ20,000 is funded, the bookmaker blocks new deposits until the next week โ€” you can't override it on impulse.
Double Chance Market
A bet covering two of the three possible outcomes (Home/Draw, Home/Away, or Draw/Away). Lower odds than a straight 1X2 but higher win probability (~67% vs ~33%). Example: Hibernian or Draw at 2.09 โ€” wins on Hibernian win OR draw, only loses if Celtic wins.
Draw No Bet (DNB) Market
A bet where the draw is voided โ€” your stake is returned if the match ends level. Effectively eliminates one of the three outcomes; lower odds than 1X2. Example: Celtic DNB at 1.27 โ€” stake โ‚ฆ1,000, returns โ‚ฆ1,270 if Celtic win, โ‚ฆ1,000 if draw, โ‚ฆ0 if Celtic lose. Same bet as Asian Handicap +0.

E ยท 5 terms

Each-Way Bet Type
Two bets in one โ€” one for the selection to win, one for it to "place" (finish in the top 2-4 depending on field size). Common in horse racing. Example: Backing a horse at 10.00 each-way for โ‚ฆ500 = โ‚ฆ500 to win + โ‚ฆ500 to place = โ‚ฆ1,000 total stake. Win = both bets pay (full odds for win, fractional for place). Place but no win = only the place portion pays.
Edge Strategy
The mathematical advantage you have on a bet โ€” typically expressed as a percentage. Recreational bettors usually have negative edge against the bookmaker; professional bettors find positive edge. Example: Sharp Pinnacle prices Chelsea to win at 1.90 (โ‰ˆ53% true probability). Bet9ja prices the same Chelsea win at 2.10 (โ‰ˆ48% implied probability). The 5% gap is your edge โ€” long-term, betting that gap makes money.
eSports Market
Competitive video gaming as a betting market. Most large bookmakers carry CS:GO, Dota 2, League of Legends, and Valorant. Example: "CS:GO Major Final โ€” NaVi to beat FaZe at 1.75". Same betting mechanics as football, different sport. Available on Bet9ja, 1xBet, Paripesa and most major books.
Even Money Format
Odds of 2.00 (decimal) / 1/1 (fractional) / +100 (American). You win the same amount you stake. Example: 2.00 decimal = +100 American = 1/1 fractional. Stake โ‚ฆ1,000 to win โ‚ฆ1,000 (return โ‚ฆ2,000 total).
Expected Value (EV) Strategy
The mathematical "average" outcome of a bet over the long run. Positive EV bets win money over time even if individual bets lose. Example: Coin toss with fair odds of 2.00 = 0% EV (break-even long term). Coin toss at 2.10 = +5% EV (positive โ€” wins money long-term). Coin toss at 1.90 = -5% EV (negative โ€” loses money long-term).

F ยท 4 terms

Favourite General
The selection with the lowest odds โ€” the one the bookmaker thinks is most likely to win. Example: In Real Madrid (1.40) vs Getafe (8.00), Real Madrid is the favourite. The lower the odds, the bigger the favourite.
First Goalscorer Market
A bet on which player will score the first goal in a match. High odds, niche market. Example: "Erling Haaland to score first" at 4.50 โ€” wins only if Haaland scores the first goal of the match. If anyone else opens the scoring, the bet loses (even if Haaland scores second).
Fixed Odds General
The most common type of betting โ€” odds are locked when you place the bet. Compare to spread betting (where payout depends on margin). Example: You back Liverpool at 2.00. Even if Liverpool's price drifts to 3.00 by kick-off, your bet is locked at 2.00 โ€” that's fixed odds. Compare to spread betting where payout depends on margin.
Fold Bet Type
The number of legs in an accumulator. A 4-fold = 4 selections, 5-fold = 5 selections, etc. Example: 5-fold = 5 selections, 8-fold = 8 selections. "I lost a 6-fold by one leg" = I had 6 selections in an accumulator, 5 won, 1 lost.

G ยท 2 terms

GG/NG Market
Common shorthand for Both Teams To Score Yes (GG, "Goal/Goal") or No (NG, "No Goal"). The most-used African betting shorthand. Example: Hibernian vs Celtic โ€” GG 1.60, NG 2.27. A 2-1 result settles GG. A 0-2 settles NG. There's also a stricter GG 2+ variant โ€” both teams need 2+ goals each.
Goliath Bet Type
A multi-bet structure on 8 selections covering 247 separate bets (28 doubles, 56 trebles, 70 four-folds, 56 five-folds, 28 six-folds, 8 seven-folds, 1 eight-fold). Niche, expensive. Example: 8 selections combined into 247 separate bets โ€” every possible double, treble, four-fold, five-fold, six-fold, seven-fold, plus the 8-fold. Stake of โ‚ฆ100 per bet = โ‚ฆ24,700 total stake. Niche, expensive, and rarely profitable.

H ยท 3 terms

Handicap Market
A virtual head-start (or deficit) given to a team to make a one-sided market more competitive. Goals are added/subtracted before settling. Example: Celtic Home -1 means Celtic must win by 2+ for the bet to win โ€” a 2-1 Celtic win adjusts to 1-1 (draw) and the Celtic -1 bet loses. See also Asian Handicap.
Hedge Strategy
Placing an opposite bet on a different outcome to reduce risk on an existing position. Often used to lock in profit on long-shot accumulators that have most legs settled. Example: You backed an 8-leg acca at โ‚ฆ100 โ†’ โ‚ฆ12,000 potential. With 7 legs settled and only Arsenal needing to beat Spurs, you back Spurs separately at 2.50 for โ‚ฆ4,800. If Arsenal wins โ†’ โ‚ฆ12,000 return (lose hedge โ‚ฆ4,800) = โ‚ฆ7,200 net. If Spurs wins โ†’ โ‚ฆ12,000 from hedge = โ‚ฆ12,000 (lose acca). Either way you lock in profit.
Hot General
A team or player on a winning streak. Often (incorrectly) thought to predict future performance โ€” see "gambler's fallacy". Example: "Liverpool are hot at home โ€” 6 wins in a row" โ€” recent winning streak. Useful narrative; rarely a reliable predictor (see "gambler's fallacy").

In-Play (Live Betting) Feature
Betting on events that are in progress. Odds shift in real time as the event develops. Example: Match starts at 1-0 to Arsenal at half-time. The pre-match Over 2.5 was 1.80; in-play it's now 2.50 because only one half remains. Betting in-play means betting on shifting prices as the match develops.
Implied Probability Strategy
The probability the odds suggest. Decimal odds of 2.00 imply 50% probability. Decimal odds of 4.00 imply 25%. The bookmaker margin means the implied probabilities across all outcomes sum to over 100%. Example: Decimal odds of 2.00 imply 50% probability (1 รท 2.00). Odds of 4.00 imply 25% (1 รท 4.00). Odds of 1.50 imply 67% (1 รท 1.50). Across all outcomes, implied probabilities sum to >100% โ€” the excess is the bookmaker margin.

J ยท 1 term

Juice (Vig / Vigorish) Strategy
The bookmaker's built-in margin โ€” the reason implied probabilities sum to more than 100%. Typical sportsbook juice is 4-8% per market. Example: On a 50/50 market like a coin toss, fair odds would be 2.00/2.00. Bookmaker prices it 1.91/1.91 instead โ€” that 0.18 difference per outcome is the juice. Across the market, implied probabilities sum to ~104.7% instead of 100%.

K ยท 2 terms

Kelly Criterion Strategy
A formula for optimal bet sizing based on your perceived edge and bankroll. Most bettors use a fractional Kelly (e.g., 25% of full Kelly) to reduce variance. Example: You think Chelsea has a 55% true probability of winning, priced at 2.10 (47.6% implied). Full-Kelly stake = (55% ร— 2.10 - 1) รท (2.10 - 1) โ‰ˆ 14% of bankroll. Most punters use 1/4 Kelly โ€” so ~3.5% per bet.
KYC General
"Know Your Customer" โ€” the identity verification process bookmakers run before allowing withdrawals. Required by law in every regulated market. Example: You request your first withdrawal of โ‚ฆ50,000 from Sportybet. Before payment, Sportybet asks for a photo of your government ID + a proof-of-address utility bill. That's KYC. Required by NLRC, BCLB, FSCA and every other African regulator.

L ยท 5 terms

Lay Bet Bet Type
Betting that something WON'T happen โ€” common on betting exchanges (Betfair, Smarkets). You take the role of the bookmaker. Example: On Betfair, you "lay" Manchester United at 2.50 for โ‚ฆ1,000. If Manchester United loses or draws, you collect โ‚ฆ1,000 (minus exchange commission). If they win, you pay out โ‚ฆ1,500 (the 1.50 net win ร— โ‚ฆ1,000 stake).
Leg Bet Type
A single selection within an accumulator. A 5-leg acca has 5 individual bets that all need to win. Example: In a 5-leg accumulator: "Real Madrid to win" is leg 1, "Bayern to win" leg 2, "Both teams to score in Liverpool match" leg 3, etc. All 5 must win for the acca to pay.
Limit Bet General
The maximum stake a bookmaker will accept on a given selection. Usually higher for popular markets, lower for niche ones. Example: Bet9ja accepts up to โ‚ฆ5 million on Premier League 1X2, but only โ‚ฆ50,000 on the Bayelsa State Premier League. The โ‚ฆ50,000 cap is the limit bet for that market.
Live Betting Feature
See In-Play. Example: See In-Play.
Long Shot General
A selection with very low probability and very high odds. Cinderella story bets. Example: A 12-leg accumulator at total odds of 250.00 โ€” staking โ‚ฆ200 for a potential โ‚ฆ50,000 return. Win probability ~0.4%. Fun, rarely profitable.

M ยท 4 terms

Margin Strategy
See Juice. Example: See Juice. Typical African football 1X2 margins: Bet9ja ~5-6%, Sportybet ~6-7%, 1xBet ~3-4%. Lower margin = better long-term value.
Match Bet Bet Type
A bet on the winner of a single sporting event. Example: "Manchester City to beat Burnley" at 1.45. One match, one selection, one outcome. The simplest bet you can place.
Money Line Market
A straight bet on which team/player wins, with no handicap. American format displays as +/- a number; African/European formats use decimals. Example: "Bayern Munich to win Bundesliga match" at 1.30 (Africa/EU decimal) or "Bayern -250" (American format) โ€” same bet, different display. No handicap, just who wins.
Multi-Bet Bet Type
See Accumulator. Example: See Accumulator. "I built a 5-leg multi-bet" = 5 selections in one slip.

N ยท 2 terms

NPFL League
Nigeria Premier Football League โ€” Nigeria's top football division. Deepest market depth on Bet9ja and MSport. Example: Enyimba vs Rivers United, Kano Pillars vs Plateau United โ€” these are NPFL fixtures. Bet9ja typically lists 60-80 markets per match; international books often only carry 1X2.
No Action Outcome
A bet that's voided โ€” stake is returned. Common when an event is postponed beyond a certain window or doesn't take place. Example: You backed Manchester United at 1.80 in a Cup tie. The match is postponed by 3 weeks due to weather. The bet becomes "no action" โ€” your โ‚ฆ1,000 stake is returned, neither win nor loss.

O ยท 3 terms

Odds Format
The bookmaker's price on a selection. Reflects implied probability + bookmaker margin. Example: Real Madrid 1.40 / Draw 4.50 / Getafe 8.00 โ€” the bookmaker thinks Real Madrid will win ~71% of the time, draw ~22%, Getafe win ~13%. Implied probabilities sum to ~106% (the 6% excess is bookmaker margin).
Odds Shopping Strategy
Comparing odds on the same selection across multiple bookmakers and staking with the one offering the best price. The single biggest ROI lever for recreational bettors. Example: Manchester City to beat Burnley โ€” Bet9ja 1.45, Sportybet 1.48, 1xBet 1.51, 22bet 1.46. Staking on 1xBet (1.51) instead of Bet9ja (1.45) pays โ‚ฆ60 more on every โ‚ฆ1,000 bet. Across 200 slips a year that's โ‚ฆ12,000 of pure ROI lift. See our Odds Scanner and the blog post.
Over/Under Market
A bet on whether the total of something (goals, points, corners) will be over or under a specified number. Most common: Over/Under 2.5 goals in football. Example: Hibernian/Celtic โ€” Over 2.5 at 1.60, Under 2.5 at 2.26. A 3-1 settles Over (4 goals). A 2-0 settles Under (only 2 goals โ€” and 2 is not over 2.5). See also Over/Under Asian for quarter-line versions.

P ยท 5 terms

Parlay Bet Type
American word for accumulator. Example: American word for accumulator. "I hit a 7-leg parlay for $2,400" = 7-leg acca, $2,400 win.
Permutation (Perm) Bet Type
A multi-bet covering all combinations of selections from a larger pool. Example: a 4-from-5 perm covers all 5 possible 4-fold accumulators from 5 selections. Example: A "4-from-5 perm" with 5 picks = 5 separate 4-leg accumulators (every possible combination of 4 of those 5 picks). Stake โ‚ฆ200 per acca = โ‚ฆ1,000 total. If 4 of your 5 picks win, exactly one of the 5 accas wins.
Pick General
A selection or tip. "My pick today is Liverpool to win.". Example: "My picks today: Real Madrid (W), Bayern (W), Chelsea (Draw)" โ€” three selections you're recommending or staking on.
Place Bet Type
In each-way betting, finishing in the paid positions (typically top 2-4 in horse racing). Earns part of the win odds. Example: In a horse race with 12+ runners, "place" usually pays positions 1-3. Each-way bet at 8.00 win odds, 1/4 odds for place โ€” if your horse finishes 3rd, the place portion pays at 1 + (8-1)/4 = 2.75.
Push Outcome
When a handicap or total bet ends exactly on the line, voiding the bet and returning the stake. Asian Handicap eliminates pushes via fractional handicaps. Example: You back Over 2.5 goals on a match that ends 2-1 (3 goals = clearly Over). But if the line was Over 3.0 and the match ends 3-0, that's exactly on the line = push, stake refunded. Asian Handicap quarter-lines avoid pushes by splitting the stake.

R ยท 2 terms

Rollover Promotion
The number of times you must wager bonus funds before being able to withdraw winnings. "20ร— rollover at minimum 1.80 odds" is typical for African welcome bonuses. Example: 20ร— rollover at min 1.80 odds on a โ‚ฆ10,000 bonus = you must wager โ‚ฆ200,000 total at 1.80+ before withdrawing any winnings. Designed to keep bonus money in play.
ROI (Return on Investment) Strategy
Profit รท total stakes, expressed as a percentage. Recreational bettors usually run -5% to -8%; +2% over a large sample is professional-grade. Example: โ‚ฆ5,000 staked across the year, โ‚ฆ5,200 returned = +4% ROI. Sustained +2% ROI over thousands of bets is professional-grade. Most recreational bettors run -5% to -8%.

S ยท 7 terms

Self-Exclusion Responsible
Locking yourself out of a sportsbook account for a defined period (24h to permanent). Required offering by every regulated African operator. See Responsible Gambling. Example: You log into your Bet9ja account, go to Settings โ†’ Responsible Gambling โ†’ Self-Exclusion โ†’ "Lock for 6 months". Account becomes inaccessible until the period ends. Use it the moment chasing losses feels tempting.
Single Bet Bet Type
A bet on one selection only. The simplest bet type. Example: "Real Madrid to beat Getafe" at 1.40 for โ‚ฆ1,000 stake. One selection, one outcome, one settlement. Returns โ‚ฆ1,400 if Real Madrid wins.
Sportsbook General
See Bookmaker. Example: Bet9ja is Nigeria's largest sportsbook by volume. Sportybet is the largest mobile-first sportsbook. Same meaning as bookmaker โ€” different word.
Spread Market
See Handicap. Example: See Handicap. "Real Madrid -1.5 spread" = Real Madrid must win by 2+ goals to cover.
Stake General
The amount you bet. Example: On a 2.00-odds bet returning โ‚ฆ2,000, your stake is โ‚ฆ1,000. Stake รท bankroll = your bet sizing โ€” most disciplined punters keep stakes at 1-2% of bankroll per bet.
Sting General
A particularly painful loss โ€” usually when an accumulator misses by a single leg. Example: "6-leg acca at 80.00 โ€” I lost the last leg in the 94th minute. Brutal sting." A particularly painful loss, almost always when one leg of an accumulator dies late.
Surebet Strategy
See Arbitrage. Example: See Arbitrage. "I found a Bayern surebet at 1.05% โ€” guaranteed โ‚ฆ100 on every โ‚ฆ10,000 staked across the right combination of books."

T ยท 3 terms

Teaser Bet Type
An accumulator-style bet where you can adjust point spreads in your favour, in exchange for lower odds. Common in American sports. Example: A 6-point NFL teaser on 2 selections โ€” you adjust each spread by 6 points in your favour, but odds drop from +260 (untreased 2-leg parlay) to +120 (teased version). Common in American sports.
Treble Bet Type
A 3-leg accumulator. Example: A 3-leg accumulator. Real Madrid (1.50) + Bayern (1.40) + Liverpool (1.60) = 3.36 total odds. โ‚ฆ1,000 stake returns โ‚ฆ3,360 if all three win.
Trixie Bet Type
A 4-bet structure on 3 selections (3 doubles + 1 treble). Pays even if only 2 of the 3 selections win. Example: 4 bets on 3 selections โ€” 3 doubles + 1 treble. Real Madrid + Bayern + Liverpool as a Trixie at โ‚ฆ100 per line = โ‚ฆ400 total stake. If 2 of 3 win, you collect on 1 double; if all 3 win, you collect on all 4 bets.

U ยท 1 term

Underdog General
The selection with higher odds โ€” less likely to win according to the bookmaker. Example: In Real Madrid (1.40) vs Getafe (8.00), Getafe is the underdog. Higher payout if they win, lower probability of winning.

V ยท 2 terms

Value Strategy
A bet where you believe the true probability is higher than the implied probability of the odds. The foundation of profitable betting. Example: You believe Chelsea has a 55% true win probability, but the bookmaker prices Chelsea at 2.10 (47.6% implied). The 7.4% gap is value โ€” long-term, betting that gap makes money.
Void Outcome
A bet that's cancelled โ€” stake returned. Common when a match is abandoned or a player is a non-starter. Example: You backed a player to score anytime; he's a non-starter (didn't even come off the bench). Bet voided โ€” stake refunded, no win, no loss.

W ยท 3 terms

Wager General
Another word for bet. Example: Same as bet. "Wager โ‚ฆ1,000 on Real Madrid" = "bet โ‚ฆ1,000 on Real Madrid".
Win-Win Strategy
See Hedge. Example: See Hedge. "I cashed out the first leg and hedged the second โ€” win-win whatever happens."
Withdrawal General
Taking money out of your sportsbook wallet. Speed varies wildly between operators โ€” see our Top Betting Sites rankings for payout-speed scores. Example: โ‚ฆ25,000 withdrawal request from Sportybet โ€” typically settled in under 10 minutes to a Nigerian bank account. The same request on Bet9ja takes ~15-25 minutes. Speed varies by operator โ€” see Top Betting Sites for payout-speed scores.
