Mason Greenwood has dropped all charges in a lawsuit that includes allegations of attempted rape, assault, coercive and controlling behavior.
The Manchester United striker was given an indefinite suspension by the Premier League club after allegations surfaced, but has been released on bail after being arrested in January 2022.
He was then arrested again and indicted by prosecutors for violating the terms of his bail.
Greenwood has now dropped all charges, but it was announced in November that a court date had been set for February 2023.
The 21-year-old said in his statement:
“We are relieved that this issue has been resolved. We thank our family, loved ones and friends for their support. No further comment at this time.”
United released the following statement on Thursday:
“Manchester United takes note of the UK Public Prosecutor’s Office’s decision to drop all charges against Mason Greenwood. The club will now undertake its own process before deciding on its next steps. Until then, I will refrain from further comment.”
Meanwhile, Chief Superintendent Michaela Kerr, Public Protection Officer for Greater Manchester Police, said in a statement:
“A criminal case against a 21-year-old man related to a preliminary investigation that began in January 2022 was dropped by CPS today (Thursday, February 2, 2023). “Given the widespread media coverage of this case, a 21-year-old man who was arrested and charged in connection with an investigation that began in January 2022 has no connection with it.
“The investigative team is in regular contact with the legal department and has provided all relevant updates, so we can understand why we are closing the case at this stage and that this decision has not been taken lightly. I understand.
“Despite the media and public interest in this matter, we have chosen not to comment further.
“However, I would like to take this opportunity to reiterate his GMP commitment to investigate allegations of violence against women and girls and to support those affected during this potentially difficult and troublesome time, regardless of the circumstances. I would like.
“More and more officers are getting professional training, and police are using the tools available through the criminal justice system more consistently to keep people safe and care for victims. “If you are, or think you may be, a victim, please don’t let this case prevent you from seeking help.”
