Christian Atsu found dead, agent confirms
Former Chelsea and Newcastle footballer Christian Atu has been found dead in Turkey after a devastating earthquake, his agent has confirmed.
The body of Ghanaian footballer Christian Atu was recovered from the rubble of a devastating earthquake in Turkey after a 12-day search, his agent confirmed.
Atu, 31, has been missing since the February 6 earthquake destroyed the building where he lived in Hatay, southern Turkey.
A representative for former Chelsea and Newcastle winger Murat Uzunmemet confirmed his body had been found in a statement on Saturday morning.
“Atsu’s corpse was found under the rubble. More items are now being removed. We also found his mobile phone,” he told reporters in Hatay, where Atu played for Hataispor.
It was revealed on Friday that Atu was due to leave the country to visit his family, but canceled his flight after scoring a last-minute win against Kasim Pasha the day before the earthquake.
The death toll in Turkey and Syria has reached his 45,000 and is expected to rise further in the coming weeks as many are still missing.
