Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid are getting used to meeting each other in the Champions League, with the hosts beating Atletico Madrid in the final of the competition in two of the last three seasons. This time we’re guaranteed a different final match up though, with Diego Simeone hoping the two legs of the semi-final can provide his side with more luck than their previous finals against their arch rivals.
Real Madrid made it through to this stage in rather controversial circumstances. They led going into the second leg after a 2-1 win away to Bayern Munich, but they were forced into extra time at the Bernebeu before beating them again 4-2 thanks to some rather strange refereeing decisions.
They followed that with a crushing 3-2 defeat at home to Barcelona, putting them on the back foot in the race for the La Liga title despite them winning their next two matches in the league. They are level on points with their arch rivals but trail them on head to head results.
Atletico Madrid are pretty much out of the title race at this point, sitting 3rd in the table but with a ten point deficit on the leading duo. This puts even more emphasis on that elusive Champions League title that they have come so close to in the past few years.
They set themselves up well for the game by beating Las Palmas 5-0 away from home on Saturday to make it nine wins, three draws, and just one defeat in their last 13 games in all competitions. This includes their 2-1 aggregate win over Leicester in the Champions League quarter finals.
Away from home Atletico Madrid are actually proving more difficult to beat than at home. Their last defeat on the road was back in December, and they have won nine and drawn seven of their 16 games since then. Meanwhile, Real Madrid have only won three of their last six home games, which includes two recent defeats in normal time against Bayern Munich and Barcelona.
Our Prediction: UNDER 2.5
