FIFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Dele Alli after his obscene gesture during England’s game with Slovakia.
Alli gestured with his middle finger during the 2-1 victory at Wembley on Monday, an act he claims was directed towards team-mate and friend Kyle Walker.
A FIFA spokesman said: “We can confirm that disciplinary proceedings have been opened following this incident. Please understand we cannot comment further at this stage.”
Alli apologized on social media following England’s game, claiming the gesture was intended for Walker and not French referee Clement Turpin.
England manager Gareth Southgate said Alli had assured him the gesture was meant in a light-hearted manner.
Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino says that Dele Alli’s gesture whilst away on England duty was not a fantastic but believes it was just a joke with Kyle Walker.
“I’ve not seen it but I’ve been made aware of it. Dele and Kyle were mucking about and Deli made a gesture towards Kyle,” Southgate said.
“I don’t know what’s been visible on the picture and what the angle of the picture is. They have a strange way of communicating but that’s what they’ve said when I raised it.
“But as I say, I haven’t seen it myself.”
